The Dexter TV Show is a returning drama series which premiered on the premium cable network Showtime on 1st October 2006.  The program is based on the novels written by Jeff Lindsay, namely Darkly Dreaming Dexter and Deadly Devoted Dexter.

The main characters of the show are as follows:-

Dexter Morgan is a forensic expert within the Miami Dade Police Department and has a steady relationship with girlfriend, Rita.  However, lurking beneath what appears to be his rather ordinary personality he has a hidden agenda as far as those who have escaped the criminal justice system are concerned.

Rita is Dexter’s girlfriend and is everything he is looking for in a partner. Having survived a period of time with an aggressive and cruel ex husband, and sporting the scars to show it, Rita is a downtrodden, single mother of two children who is not at all interested in a physical relationship. Along with Dexter, she tries to make their often perverse lives seem a little more normal.

Debra Morgan is Dexter’s cop sister and even though she feels certain that there is more to her brother than meets the eye, she nonetheless holds him in high regard.  Career wise Deb has moved from Vice into Homicide but is insecure in her role due to the belief within the department that her best police work is done in a "sex suit".

Sgt Doakes is the short fused cop on the force, an expert in character judging who thinks everything isn’t quite as it seems as far as Dexter is concerned.

Lt. Maria LaGuerta is the boss of the division and whether it is a friendly wink, a sideways glance or a gentle hand placed on his shoulder, she makes no effort whatsoever to cover up her interest of a sexual nature in Dexter.

Angel Batista is a homicide detective who works closely with Dexter on all things forensic.  He is definitely into the art of killing but not to the extremes of Dexter’s blood thirsty lust.  

Harry Morgan is a former homicide detective and the adopted father of Dexter.  He was the first person to notice Dexter’s infatuation with human vivisection and did all he could to encourage Dexter to pursue his homicidal inclinations to the level of bringing vigilante justice to the forefront.

Vincent Masuka, forensic expert and a bit of a wise crack, is usually by Dexter’s side when investigating crime scenes.  He takes every opportunity open to him to make well out of place passes at Dexter’s sister, Debra.

The show takes the form of a crime thriller which follows forensic expert Dexter Morgan and his work for the Miami Dade Police Department.  On a personal note, Dexter has a girlfriend with two children all of whom totally adore him, and a dependent sister. 

Dexter enjoys what could only be described as an interesting night life.  Following his upbringing, with strong influences from Harry, his foster father, Dexter spends the hours of darkness looking for past perpetrators of crime and using his own way of making absolutely sure they never get away with committing crimes again.

In Season One, Episode One, the show gets off to a great start and a dedicated fan base was immediately formed when Dexter’s sister Debra involves her brother in her world of vice.  A series of murders take place against hookers in the Miami area and Debra takes this opportunity to make an impression on Dexter’s boss, Lt. Laguerta.  Meanwhile Rita, Dexter’s girlfriend decides she would like to take her relationship with him one step further.
On 30th January, 2008 the Parents Television Council, otherwise known as the PTC called upon CBS to withdraw plans for the show to be shown on broadcast television due to its alleged non suitability.  Parental discretion advisories were added to the broadcast, minor edits were made on language and some scenes considered to be of an unsuitable nature were edited from the show.
